💡 What does "Local Energy Sharing" actually mean for you?
It means sharing solar power directly between members. Instead of surplus electricity going to the national grid, it stays within your community, allowing you to buy less from your regular supplier.
The two types of energy communities in Luxembourg:
Local Energy Community
CEL (Communauté Énergétique Locale)
Distance Limit: Maximum 300 metres between furthest members
Grid Fees on Shared Energy: Exempt – no public grid usage fees
National Energy Community
CER (Communauté Énergétique Renouvelable nationale)
Distance Limit: No restriction – anywhere in Luxembourg
Grid Fees on Shared Energy: Grid fees apply
How it works in practice:
- Your smart meter tracks sharing automatically every 15 minutes
- Your group decides the internal price together (usually lower than market rates)
- You keep your regular supplier for energy not covered by the community
